Clearly not everyone agrees, and most probably never even played the original.

These games FAR outsell there original SNES sales, simply because of higher mobile phone userbase #s. People who complain about things like the FF6 and Chrono Trigger artwork changes are the vocal minorities with rose tinted glasses. If they had a 2d Version like FF6 available it would blow away FF4 in sales. Why would you do this to us? why share the pain? :'(Р”Р‡F4 3d Remake is the worst thing ever made. Look up Chrono Trigger Resurrection and then softly weep for what could have been. Thankfully usually in a minor way that doesn't change the game too much like adding cutscenes. Not remastered but Chrono Trigger did come out on the Playstation, DS and phone platforms and they with it every time. Or, barring that, don't up a classic, and keep it as it was? Instead of messing up classic pixel art with a 'HD' remaster, why not go whole-hog, and do a proper 2018-era remake? It doesn't have to have the best textures or the best models (just look at FFIV), but why not bring the adventure of Crono and company to a new era of gamers in a visual style they understand? Hell Final Fantasy IV - a game that is generally agreed to have not aged well at all - has gotten a more modern remaster for phone, DS, and PC! So, I find it sad that Chrono Trigger - one of the best JRPGs of the so-called 'Golden Age of JRPGs' - hasn't had a remaster. I suppose the scanline filters just stuck around for a long time and now perhaps some people feel nostalgia for the filter itself. Sonic Mania, for example, has a CRT filter that is a lot better at approximating the CRT look, but I imagine such a filter would have been slow on computers from around decade or two ago, when emulators started getting popular and offered scanline filters. Of course, there are much better crt filters you could use for that, but scanlines are simple to implement and light on processing power.

CRT TV pixels weren't shaped like near-perfect squares, so upscaling pixel art with nearest neighbour doesn't look right. I don't really think scanlines are used to replicate the look the old games had back in the day.Р”Р‡or me, they were more for hiding the blockiness of the square pixels we get when scaling the game up a lot. I guess what I am saying is that it must be purely for nostalgia, but even then, how can you be nostalgia for something you didn't even recognize or notice in the first place? I agree - thing is, people in the 80's/90's didn't notice scan lines (mostly from not sitting to close to the TV but also because there was no 'HD' for comparison or to get accustomed to).Р”Р„t any rate, the use of them on my pc's lcd screen doesn't really match up with what I see if I walk into the basement and turn on a crt (less sharp image, crt glow, smaller screen in terms of viewing distance, blah-blah-blah). The SNES titles all look fantastic without scan lines.

Most of these mods definitely are needed but I've never understood the appeal of scan lines.

No, a one-man, one-weekend job would have been better, since you wouldn't have the time to redraw sprites. It looks to me the dev team was one guy, the time-frame was probably one weekend, and the budget might have been $200, which includes the pizza and the Mountaindew.

Even if your tile artists have never drawn a tile before, they have to be able to see just how broken that is, right? How little of a shit do you have to give about your game to ship it in that state? How did they fuck things like that up? I just don't understand. I felt a flash of legitimate anger looking at that and I never even played Chrono Trigger (my loss, I know).Р”Вeal me in on that (except that I did play CT when it was new). So I answered my own question by browsing through the Steam reviews and finding a screenshot that perfectly demonstrates the awfulness of the filters and the tiles not matching up (and with the ugly menu buttons and font to boot):
